Maltipoo Health
We all want our Maltipoos to be as healthy as they can be. Properly caring for your Maltipoo can help aid in their long and happy life. From making sure they have regular veterinary checkups, to learning what breed-specific diseases to watch for, this page includes the many resources you need to know to keep your Maltipoo healthy.
Remember that any dog is prone to health issues. Not all of them are avoidable, but some can be prevented by taking proper care of your dog. Some health problems are due to the size of the breed and some are simply due to genetics. This particular breed is generally very active and healthy. The average life span of the Maltipoo is 14 years, which is considered a long life span for a canine.
Not all Maltipoos will get any or all of these diseases, but it is important to be aware of these conditions:
White Shaker Syndrome: only occurs in white dogs as tremors over the entire body, lack of coordination, and rapid eye movements. It usually starts when the dog is 6 months to 3 years old and gets overly excited or stressed.
Epilepsy: causes seizures in the dog. A dog can still live a full and happy life with this condition if properly treated and cared for.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy: (PRA) is a degenerative eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. PRA is detectable years before the dog shows any signs of blindness.
Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease: is a congenital degeneration of the bone ends in the hips that affects many toy breeds. Usually, the first signs occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old.
